Harper to lower GST to 5%

Conservative leader Stephen Harper announced today that if elected, his government would lower the GST to 5%. (canada.com)

We have heard this line constantly. The Liberals claimed they would scrap the GST, the Conservatives are claiming they will reduce it. Why don't we simply eliminate the GST on most essential goods and turn the GST into a "luxury tax" on a few select items.

This is an expected move for Harper, expect to see an announcement that the Conservatives will lower the income taxes if elected soon. Corporate tax rates don't buy too many votes, so don't expect any announcements there.
